Sopot is well known as the summer capital of Poland, with its pleasant microclimate and tourists from all over the world visiting the city each year. It is located between pleasant rolling hills and the coastline of the Baltic Sea, into which cuts the largest wooden pier in Europe, stretching an astonishing 511,5 m into the sea. The town can also be described as a cosy world filled with townhouses, villas, gardens and heritage parks.
The history of Sopot dates back to medieval times, when it was once a fortified town surrounded by a beech forest and picturesque landscapes. Many noble families built mansions in Sopot as a seaside retreat destination. On October 8th 1901 Sopot was first granted municipal rights by the Prussian authorities. At the start of the 2011 European Table Tennis Championships Sopot will celebrate the 110th anniversary of the granting of its city rights.
This town is beloved also by sportsmen as many have made Sopot their home, i.a. Andrzej Grubba (in his last years), pole vault world champion and olympic medallist Anna Rogowska and one of the best Polish basketball players of all time Adam Wojcik.
