The airport is located 12 km from the city of Gdansk. It currently serves the Tricity metropolitan area (Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot). Popular airlines that currently serve or cooperate on flights including i.a. Lufthansa, LOT Polish Airlines, Finnair, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, AirBerlin, SAS, TAP Portugal, Air Canada, Norwegian Airlines, Ryanair and Wizz Air. In 2006 the airport handled over 1 million passengers and two years later the number increased to almost 2 million. The airport is named after Lech Walesa, the Nobel Peace Prize holder, former Polish president and political activist of the Solidarity movement. The airport’s logo was designed based on Walesa’s signature.
