Inhabitants of the Pomerania region had to always travel to the largest sporting events in other parts of Poland before the Ergo Arena was built as there was no other venue large enough to host events of events of this magnitude. Since its official opening on the 18th of August 2010 allowing the cities of Gdansk and Sopot to also be the hosts to the world’s best sports stars. It is also one of the most advanced and innovative sports complexes of its type within the whole of Europe.
Thanks to the Ergo Arena’s modern design it can hold up to11000 spectators and together with standing spectators it can expand up to 15000 people. This fact allows a variety of sporting disciplines to be played. Volleyball, basketball, handball, table tennis, martial arts are not a huge surprise, but the ability to host ice hockey or motor-sports and even windsurfing make the Ergo Arena a special place. Until recently other cultural events took place almost only in Warsaw and Katowice but now residents of the Tri-city can also enjoy major events in their home town. Powerful audio systems, excellent acoustics, a strong roof that allows the hanging of 144 tons of audio and lighting equipment, as well as extensive space allows both musical and theatrical shows to take place. Other facilities also give the Ergo Arena the capability of hosting business meetings, trade-shows, banquets, and other less conventional events.
Superior standards and advanced technology make the Ergo Arena not only versatile, but also a safe and comfortable place for visitors. The Building Management System (BMS), the emergency warning system (DSO), adaptations for persons with physical disabilities, spacious parking lots, and the ideal location on the borders of Gdansk and Sopot gives the Ergo the Arena the opportunity of organising events at the highest level.
The hall provides the infrastructure to support a wide variety of sporting events, including European and world championships in almost every type of indoor sport. For training purposes and smaller local sporting events the training hall may be used, which has 300 seats for spectators. The Ergo arena is also well adapted to host cultural events. Music concerts, theatre performances, film screenings, visual arts, and opera are in the basic range of supported events. The hall may also serve as a business centre for congresses, conferences, exhibitions and symposia.
The first event of a European championships magnitude in the Ergo Arena will be the 2011 European Table Tennis Championships.
